The Department of Cooperatives is one of the government departments under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives for the implementation of the government's economic growth and poverty alleviation efforts. The existing manpower of this department is 4975 persons. The head of the Cooperative Department is the Registrar and the Director General. According to the organizational structure, the office of the Cooperative Department exists up to the upazila level. Power has been decentralized to the divisional, district and upazila level in accordance with the cooperative law and rules for smooth conduct of cooperative based activities. As a result, people expecting services can get any cooperative based service locally. There is a joint registrar at the divisional level, an office of the District Cooperative Officer at the district level and an office of the Upazila Cooperative Officer at the upazila level for providing services at the field level. There are. The existing services of the Department of Cooperatives can be divided into four categories namely statutory, semi-judicial developmental and promotional. Statutory services include registration, inspection, audit, annual accounts, termination of ineffective associations if necessary. The activities of the co-operative society include motivation, dispute resolution, quasi-judicial services of the co-operative department.
On the other hand, management of cooperative societies, provision of education and training for enhancing business skills, provision of services and financing are developmental activities.
